For 2 days a few weeks ago, I had the golden opportunity to see some real men do a real man's work. Our lovely neighbours Paul & Lisa had a humungous tree annihilated from their back yard.
Laws have changed here wrt the lopping of trees a certain aloofness from the family because of fire risks.
Lisa says she's always hated this tree and it not only makes a real mess when the leaves fall, and so Paul has to "puff" them all away, but it's also messing up their asphalt. There was naught else for it. The big lug had to be chipped into tiny little pieces and be done for good.
So before I had brushed my teeth and got dressed, a truck load of lads started making a racket with a chainsaw. I wanted to document the advance as often for P&L as I did for this blog. Within minutes I was up, dressed, teeth brushed and scrambling for the camera.
This guy was up that tree faster than Edward Cullen in Twilight. Ok, maybe not that fast, but pretty darn fast anyway. And sanctify him, he spent all day hanging from that corner with only a rope to keep him. And all that other safety stuff I make no thought what they call.
This corner was so tall, I couldn't get it all in one picture. And if I tried from farther away, the family was in the way. He started sawing from the bottom branch on one side, and slowly and painstakingly worked his way to the top.
When he got to the very high branches he couldn't just let the cut-offs go like he'd let the first smaller ones at the tail just drop. The arm was hoistered down slow and gently using a pully system. Edward Cullen tied the thicker end of the corner by wrapping a bit of rope round it and lowering it the bottom, while his brother had more rope tied around the bottom of the corner which was attached to Edward's rope. With me so far? So between Edward and sidekick, they together brought the arm down nice and slow. Then Edward would have to hang there and love the watch from the top while patiently for the others on the background to check that branch to smithereens before starting on the next branch.
It was all very time consuming and I bet Edward would get killed for a cuppa tea by this point. Or even but a bottle of water. All Aussies carry bottles of water around with them. All the time.
Then it went quiet. The motortruck was gone. Only to take a while later with an empty back. Lisa had said it would direct 2 years and I thought maybe they'd only be hind the following day.
No sooner had they departed and I thinking I could relax in revel in the hush that enfolded me when they came back. And it started all over again. Edward was scrambling back up that tree and started coming down again from the former side starting from the top this time. Until all that was left was a massive tree stump. And an infinite supply of firewood for one lucky person who is leaving to be staying toasty warm this winter. Unlike us in this cold house. Would yo believe we get 2 - yes 2, not exactly 1, but 2! - fireplaces in this house. Why they are both in the loaf and LITERALLY next to each other has somewhat baffled us, although that isn't saying much for me. The fact that they are both boarded up so we can't use them is also unexplainable.
But never mind. The final few metres of the tree came down in one large cut, and the lads had to get back the following day to saw that up into smaller chunks. The lucky recipient hasn't cleared his takings yet, so the lads will be second to defeat the pulpit as shortly as it's all make for them to do so. Apparently the corner was already diseased at the top, so it would have had to get down sometime anyway.

In the meantime, there is sawdust allover the place. But the missing tree has made rather a departure to the number of light we now get at the second section of the house. It's a big hole in the very lavish and tree lined area we go in.
It was fascinating to see these men do a real mans job instead of session in an office tinkering away on the computer. I recognise that all helps produce the man go around, but watching a man using his muscles like they're supposed to is only so much more fun ;-)
